My Next Marlin
This is supposed to be coming out this year. It's the Marlin Model 336BL 30/30. Marlin is also making a Model 1895GBL as well in 45/70. Might just have to go for the 45/70.
You know my fetish for laminate stocks. These just makes my heart go pitter patter... Ken Firearms Price Guide...For What It's Worth. Join Us On Facebook! Check Out Our Blog! |

RE: My Next Marlin
Marlin sure has taken over where Winchester left off. I'll bet that 45/70 has quite the thump when you pull the trigger on it. Talk about knock down power---WHEW! Isn't the 45/70 the caliber they used for nearly putting the Bison to extinction? I know the Sharp's rifle was involved in a lot of Western history, but not for sure of caliber.

RE: My Next Marlin
Hey Ken, I was looking over some used rifles today, and I came across a Marlin 1895-SS in 45/70 Government(don't know if this makes a difference) for around $500. It didn't have laminate stock, which told me it was an older model(which is OK). It had some nice, what appeared to be walnut stock, with hammer extension, Simmons 4 power scope and smooth/tight action. Even though it said SS in the model, it WAS NOT a stainless steel model. Whacha think? Same gun shop had a Chinese SKS(Nitogina? synthetic tactical stock) in 7.62x39 for $300 and a couple Russian Mosen Nagnant in 7.62x54R for less than $200. Wanting something really different for my B'Day, but don't quite know what. As to the foreign guns, I don't know if 7.62 (by) anything is good as I don't know what size these bullets represent or if readily available. Any help would be appreciated--especially on the Marlin.

Whacha think? I can only help on the Marlin. The 1895 SS is not a stainless model, and frankly I can't tell you what the SS stands for. It's a great gun, and would love to have a big bore like a 45/70. $500 is probably right on the outside of what that's worth, and the owner is probably trying to get the value of the scope and rings out of you. There is one for sale locally, quite possible an SS but I don't remember for sure, for $519. Too much as I have seen them in great condition for $450 or less. Hope this helps. RE: My Next Marlin
That is a very good lookin gun I think I would pay 500 bucks for one, but I don't recall ever seeing a box of 45/70 G on any shelves around here. How is availability of such a round in your parts?
As for the Mosin, I do know that you can get the 7.62-54 from just about anywhere and for dirt cheap on line. This is the same round that they use in there really awesome sniper rifle the Dragunov. The Mosin is a very good gun for the money, very dependable and pretty accurate for an old war rifle, has an effective range of up to 1000 yards. I will have one of these this year and I hope to be able to save up for a PSL (semi auto, Romanian knock-off of the Dragunov): http://www.dragunov.net/romanian_psl.html |

RE: My Next Marlin
45/70G around my area is quite plentiful. That SKS with tactical stock really has me thinking. I'm gonna go back to that gun shop again and look those 3 guns over again and try and do some dealing--if the guy won't deal, it won't hurt me to walk out his store. I just might be bringing home a new(old) rifle very soon.

RE: My Next Marlin
I saw that gun from national geographic channel it was once used by the indians. It has a tactical advantage at that time because it can fire in such a high rate
