Mounting Weaver rings
My Son-n-law will probably be joining me on this year's deer hunt, so I thought, I need to re-scope my Mossberg 30-06 with my older Nikon 3-9x40 Buckmaster, that I had taken off during the Spring season for zeroing in other rifles that I hadn't gotten a scope yet for. Anyway, I remounted scope and leveled rifle and scope to be sure everything was squared up, and when I "lazer bore sighted" the gun, I noticed that the lazer dot was off past the reticle adjustment point, to the right side at the 20yd mark. Now, these are the older Weaver steel rings that slipped into a grove on one side and clamp with 2 screws on the other side(like a hinge), but they have held many a scope from the 70's on other rifles and never failed me.Tried other things to see I could get reticles to line up, with no luck, then it hit me, to take off just the front scope ring(not base) and turn it 180 degrees around and have it lock down onto the base from the opposite side of gun, and lo and behold the lazer dot lined with only a couple clicks of the windage knob. Moral of story is don't be afraid to flip/turn your rings OR bases to make a scope and rifle work together, instead of just going with what's looks good or is customary. There is one thing I did with these rings and all my other scope rings, and that is to get some clear tape and cut some pieces to go into the scope's clamping area to keep clamps from leaving scope ring scratches. It's a poor man's way of not having to purchase high dollar scope rings and when clamped down, scope won't move. I'll get rifle out in couple days to do a proper shot alignment to make sure of dropping those deer in their tracks when the season comes.

RE: Mounting Weaver rings
Wow, I wouldn't have thought to do that. My solution would have been to put the end of the barrel in a vise and reefing on the butt of the gun to get everything in line. Doh

Probably not the best way, aye?

Ya know I'm just kidding, right? Spank

RE: Mounting Weaver rings
I'm sure there's lots of rifles out there that the owner just wrapped the gun's barrel around the tree after they missed an easy shot. I know I've felt like it at times.Doh Actually, not being too far off with making a bullet go around a corner. I saw awhile back a show on "Modern Marvels"(cable channel) a show on some tactical weapons, about a gun that can actually shoot around the corner. It had the receiver and barrel made on a hinge assembly and it's scope had some prizms in it to let you see what's around the corner without you actually getting into the open. Very cool stuff being made out there for tactics and safety. Also saw "Myth Busters", where they BUSTED the myth that a person could actually "bend" a bullets trajectory. I knew it was phoney also, but I'm sure there's people out there who believes it's for real.Roflblack
